Montée du fascisme en Italie

Communiqués de presse

Thématique(s) :

Sunday 25 September will be marked as a Dark Monday for the fight against facism in Europe. The Italians voted for the general election of both Chambers, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Although the polls expected such results between the different coalitions,  it was no less of a shock to Europe when the “far-right coalition”, which is unjustly named centre-right as they are opposed to abortion & LGBTQIA+-rights, was declared the winner with over 44% of the estimated vote. Having in mind that 39% of votes gives the majority in the Italian Parliament.

This gave access to Giorgia Meloni to form a government, president of the fascist party Fratelli d’Italia (“Brothers of Italy”, member of the “European Conservatives and Reformists Party”), who received more than 26% of the votes, making her the leading political party in Italy. Ahead of the Partito Democratico (Democratic Party), which received less than 20% and the Movimento 5 Stelle (5 Star Movement), which received 15%, far from its historic score in 2018. Lega got 8,8% of the votes, Forza Italia 8,1%.

Due to its specific Constitution, the country is used to political instability and successive governments, but this new result is unprecedented in Italy since the fall of facism at the end of the Second World War. Not to mention that one of the coalition parties is none other than the La Lega (“The League”, part of the European far-right parliamentary group “ID”) which is led by the pro-Russian, anti-migrant, anti-feminist and racist Matteo Salvini.

This new political earthquake comes just two weeks after the Swedish elections which saw the victory of a conservative coalition including the “Sweden Democrats” (SD). The latest voting results have made it the leading right-wing party in this Nordic country traditionally known for its social democracy and its approach to migration policy, which differs from the rest of Europe.

It is also important to note, in the context of the fight against the far right and fascism, that many messages and expressions of support from several prominent politicians were sent to the far right coalition. This is the case of Liz Truss, the new British Prime Minister who declared on Twitter: « Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni on the success of her party » but also of other European nationalist and extremist clans, from Poland to Hungary, via Sweden and Belgium with Theo Francken. The European People’s Party (EPP) also congratulated Silvio Berlusconi and his political party Forza Italia on the election of several MPs.

There are however several positive and hopeful points after these elections. The Italian Greens were elected for the first time since 2006, which is a hopeful message. They carried a coherent and consistent political project, which is in opposition to the Italian reactionary right-wing agenda. There was also a difference in the vote between Italians living abroad and those living in Italy.

For the social, feminist and green wave to take place, it is essential that all the parties of the left and the branches of youth politics realise that we are repeating the same historical mistakes and that the entry of facism into the democratic game is a mortal danger for the latter. Fundamental societal changes are needed, but contrary to their promises, populist parties fail to provide thorough alternatives. Even if we have many political differences within the European left, we cannot divide ourselves against the fascists who are getting more and more support from right-wing parties in Europe.

NL:

Truss tweette nog “Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni on the success of her party”.
